A 22-year-old man has been arrested for killing a 80-year-old woman and robbing her house in outer Delhi’s Rohini in January, police said on Friday.

“The accused along with the family’s driver had given drinks laced with sedatives to the victim’s son-in-law to take the house keys. They then killed the woman and ransacked the house.

They also took the CCTV camera system of the house to destroy evidence,” said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police (Crime).

Victim Krishna was found strangled at Balaji Apartments in Rohini Sector 14 on January 29. After an 11-month probe, police arrested Rajesh in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district on Wednesday, but driver Radha Raman is still absconding.

Krishna lived with her daughter Sandhya Sinha and her husband Shailesh. Sandhya is a teacher with a government school in north Delhi’s Rani Bagh.

On Janaury 29, Sandhya and Shailesh had left home around 7.30 am. “Sandhya went to school, while Shailesh had to go to two banks to deposit money,” Yadav added.

Around 9.30 am, Sandhya received a message on her phone confirming that the money had been deposited with Punjab and Sind Bank.

Money was also to be deposited at Corporation Bank, but she did not receive any message. So she repeatedly called her husband, but the phone was picked by Raman, who occasionally worked as a driver with the family.

Raman kept on telling Sandhya that Shailesh was busy with his friends.

“Sandhya then told Raman to come to her school to pick her up and Raman kept on assuring that he is about to reach, but he did not turn up,” Yadav said.

On returning home around 1.30 pm, Sandhya found her mother lying in a pool of blood and the household articles scattered.

Cash and jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh were missing along with the CCTV system.
As Shailesh was also missing, Sandhya informed police that Raman was involved.

Later in the day, Shailesh was found in a minimally conscious state in his car behind M2K Mall in Rohini. Shailesh confirmed that Raman and his accomplice Rajesh were involved.

On Wednesday, Rajesh was arrested. Rajesh told police that he had moved to Rajasthan to evade arrest, but returned to Delhi to meet his girlfriends. Rajesh used to frequently change his rented accommodation as well as phone to evade arrest.

A case was registered with Prashant Vihar police station and a cash reward of Rs 50,000 was also declared on information leading to Raman and Rajesh’s arrests.
