Teen gang-raped by her two friends, both held

Assaulted when she goes to celebrate her birthday

An 18-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two of her friends at a rented house in south Delhi’s RK Puram on Friday. Over the victim’s complaint, police have arrested a 20-year-old youth and apprehended a juvenile.

The girl hails from West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. She came to the capital last year and was living with relatives.

In her statement, the girl told police she had gone to the house to celebrate her 18th birthday.

She identified the accused as 20-year-old Rahul and a 17-year-old boy, residents of south Delhi’s Mohammadpur. “Rahul had made a call to the girl on Friday evening to offer celebrating together,” said a police officer.

In the house, she was allegedly forced to consume alcohol after which Rahul and the boy allegedly took turns to rape her. She was not allowed to leave the house on Friday.

In the wee hours of Saturday, she managed to escape from the house and informed police. Police took the girl to AIIMS, where her medical examination confirmed sexual assault. 

On the basis of the girl’s statement and medical report, a case of gang rape and criminal intimidation under Indian Penal Code was registered with RK Puram police station.

“It is claimed that they gagged her, took turns to rape her and also threatened her with dire consequences if she informed police,” the officer added.

Local police arrested Rahul and apprehended the juvenile on Saturday.Police have also gone through the footage of a CCTV camera installed at the entrance of the building.

Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Singh also visited the R K Puram police station and said it was extremely shameful that such incidents were taking place in the capital.

“It is a very unfortunate and shameful that this incident has happened in the capital and that they are just not stopping,” she said.

Close to 2,000 rape cases have been registered till November 30 as against 1,559 last year. On an average, six cases of rape are reported daily in the capital.
