Rajya Sabha lags behind Lok Sabha

With only two days left for the winter session to conclude, the productivity of the Rajya Sabha has proved to be far less productive than the Lok Sabha, where the NDA government was able to clear 17 bill with numbers on its side.

Because of the ongoing tussle between the government and opposition, the Upper House lost more than 35 hours due to disruptions. On the other hand, the time loss was just above two hours in the Lower House. The Rajya Sabha has witnessed interruptions during 15 of the 19 sittings.

Talking to reporters in Hyderabad, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the opposition should allow the Rajya Sabha to function so that several important bills like the insurance bill, coal mines nationalisation amendment bill and anti-hijacking of aircraft bill can be passed.

In a sharp contrast, the Lok Sabha worked for over 126 hours in the stipulated 20 sittings with a productivity of over 105 per cent, while the Rajya Sabha, where the NDA government is a minority, has a productivity of only 68 per cent. The Rajya Sabha has passed only 11 bills so far.
