Pedalling to peddle the fitness message

The City’s cycling communities braved a chilly Sunday morning to popularise the healthier and greener mode of transport among the commuters.

Cyclists’ Day, organised by ICYCLE.IN, drew around 400 cyclists from across Bengaluru to Shalini Grounds in Jayanagar. Members of cycling communities such as ‘Bums on the Saddle’, ‘Wheel Sports’, ‘Pro Cycle’ and ‘Go Green Go Cycle’ hit the streets, avowing to reduce the carbon footprints in this once ‘Garden City’.

Joseph Franklin, co-founder of ICYCLE.IN, said that the response was positive and it was the second time that they managed to get all cyclists under one roof.

Pollution levels

The participants declared their commitment to reducing pollution levels in the City. A bicycle exhibition, with free bicycle check-up and riding lessons, was also organised for cycling enthusiasts. Jayanagar MLA B N Vijaya Kumar, who cheered cyclists, said that a total of 45 km of cycling tracks are available on various lanes in Jayanagar alone.

“They were built three years ago, but are not being used by the public. Hence, we plan to hold the Cyclists’ Day every month by joining hands with various cycling groups. This way, people will be encouraged to use the cycling tracks and become fitness conscious,” the MLA hoped.
