Painting, lecture session to save the magnificent jumbo

Scores of jumbo lovers including artists, children and biologists joined hands on Sunday to participate in a day-long painting and lecture session to create awareness on the need to save elephants.

Roshini Shaheen, an architect by profession and a first-time participant, said: “Elephants are wonderful animals and they need to be protected. When I learnt that this competition was for a cause, I immediately agreed to participate.”

The competition titled “Painting for Elephants” was held at the Metro Rangoli Art Center.
The day was divided into three sessions. The morning session was dedicated to children aged between 8 and 15 years. The afternoon painting competition was for artists and professionals. In the evening, there were two lectures — ‘Art, Wildlife and Elephants’ by cartoonist Rohan Chakravarthy and ‘Elephant in the Room’ by conservation biologist and artist Arjun Srivathsa.

Speaking about the competition, Surendra Verma, Research Scientist at The Asian Nature Conservation Foundation, IISc, and member of Friends of Elephants, said: “We have been organising various workshops and competitions since the last few months and will continue to do so. Though prizes will be given on the same day, the paintings will be preserved for a grand painting exhibition that will be held later.”

Prashant R, a student from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, who took part in the event, said: “I am participating for the first time in the programme and will do so again.
I want to create awareness through art. Elephants are kind and less dangerous than humans, which is why I am here for them.”
