Bizman killed as SUV rams trucks

Sound of impact wakes up residents

A 21-year-old businessman driving an SUV was killed after his vehicle flipped over a road and rammed into a truck on the other side near New Delhi’s Buddha Garden in the wee hours of Sunday.

Police are yet to ascertain whether the man was drunk at the time of the accident. Based on preliminary evidence, police suspect him to be driving in excess of 130 kmph. He was alone in the vehicle when the accident happened.

The truck driver has been held and is being questioned. He claimed innocence, alleging that the Ford Endeavour SUV broke the divider railings and collided head-on with his truck.

The truck driver Dhammi Lal, 50, was coming from Manesar and was heading towards Karol Bagh when the accident took place on Ridge Road in Chankyapuri.
Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the SUV was approaching from Dhaula Kuan side.

“The vehicle went out of control near gate number two of Buddha Garden. The victim was brought dead at a hospital. We suspect he died on the spot,” said a police officer.
The victim has been identified as Sachin, a resident of west Delhi’s New Moti Nagar. He has his private business in the area.

The impact of the accident was such that the crash sound woke up some people sleeping in nearby areas.

Initially, those people tried to rescue the victim trapped inside the car. However, a door locked from inside, combined with an unconscious driver, did not help their cause. It was then that one of them informed the police.

When police too failed to rescue the victim, a disaster management team was summoned to the spot. They used gas cutters to bring the victim out of the vehicle.
The truck driver did not flee the spot after the accident and he was detained for questioning. Police at Chanakyapuri police station have registered a case.
