Get amused in east Delhi soon

Appu Ghar-like facility to come up, lake development project starts

After ‘Adventure Island’ in Rohini, the capital is all set to get another amusement park in east Delhi’s Tahirpur area. A proposal in this regard has been passed by the Standing Committee of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Also, the civic agency has kickstarted Rs 22 crore Welcome Lake redevelopment work in Shahdara as part of another project.

The amusement park will spread on 28 acres of land in Tahirpur. “The park will be built on a public-private-partnership basis and a consultant has already been engaged for the project,” said a senior official with the East Corporation. “The proposal will be tabled in the next House meeting of the East Corporation,” added the official.

With an aim to revive “dead” lake situated in Welcome area, the civic agency has planned to redevelop the water body and build a park around it. “The project will bring back wetland and aquatic ecosystem in the region,” said the proposal.

East Delhi Mayor Meenakshi laid the foundation stone of the project on Saturday. “It will one of the first park where a public-private-partnership model will be tried and tested,” said an official with East Corporation.

“The redevelopment project of lake will use pythorid natural technology for sewage treatment,” he added.

The project will be finished in two phases – the first phase consists of treating the water, which will take nine months and cost Rs 22 lakh, the second phase will see the construction of park around it, the official added.

“The project aims at biologically treating large amount of sewage water and reviving a derelict land in the heart of the city,” said the proposal.

The redeveloped Welcome Lake will have cafeteria, amphitheatre, meditation garden and walkways including programmes like light, sound and laser shows, the project proposal said.

Earlier Welcome Lake had a musical fountain, but gradually it stopped working.
Sanjay Lake is another water body in east Delhi, which was selected by Delhi Development Authority for its revival among 63 other lakes.
