Best foot forward for sports development

Taking the cause of ‘sports for development’ a step further, Stairs, the NGO working for the upliftment of underprivileged youth kick-started the Stairs School Football League (SSFL)on December 1.

Though the tournament will end on Tuesday it gave hundreds of football enthusiasts an arena to showcase their talentand represent their respective schools.

The tournament saw participation of teams from the Delhi-NCR region which included 43 Kendriya Vidyalayas, 924 Delhi government and other public schools.  Every team played at least three matches. A total of 256 matches were played during the 20-day-long tournament in adherence to the FIFA guidelines.

One of the matches attended by Metrolife saw a tough fight between Happy Model School and Shah International School, where the latter won the match by securing one goal against the former. In the second match Geeta Senior Secondary School scored three goals against Bosco Public School, who could only score one goal in the match. The third match was won by Mamta Modern.

The Government Boys Senior Secondary (GBSS) School, Moti Bagh and Navyug Senior Secondary School match ended on a score of 2-1, while Venkateshwara International School won the match against Vandana International School by 2-1.

The inaugural match was between teams from Government Boys Senior Secondary Schools (GBSS) Moti Bagh and Central Reserve Police Force School, Rohini. It was attended by Michael Steiner, German Ambassador, Ajit M Sharan, Sports Secretary, Ashok Chaturvedi, CMD, Uflex Group including others.

“The league intends to develop a well-organised grassroot youth development program, through an organised championship league which will be committed towards structured professional training. This will also allow access to football to the children in their own environment. The idea of this league is that every enthusiastic boy between the age group of 14-17 gets an opportunity,” said Siddhartha Upadhyay,founder, Stairs.
