Journalists and MPs unite for a noble cause

Forever in tussle journalists and Members of Parliament came together for a healthy cricket match “batting for life”, intended to spread awareness about rampant childhood diseases and reinforce every child’s right to the future they deserve.

The match is organised every year by Global Health strategies which is an international consulting company that works with clients to ensure development and worldwide delivery of health products, technologies and information. This year the match was held at the cricket ground of DPS, Mathura Road over the weekend.

The MPs were led by Anurag Thakur, Hamirpur MP and Javed Ansari, Editor, national affairs, Headlines

Today leading the journalists’ team. Present on the occassion were Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, as the chief guest, and Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda. The toss was won by the MP 11 with the Journalists 11 settling to field.

The match turned out to be a fun event with witty commentary by the Aaj Tak anchor, Shweta Singh with Umpires RS Rawat and K Sharma. There were some excellent sporting performances by Rajyvardhan Rathore ex-shooter and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Aaj Tak anchor Vikrant Gupta and Sawan Kumar from CNN IBN. Having won the toss, the MPs’ team was off to a relatively slow start, having scored a mere 21 runs off the first five overs. Manoj Tiwari rescued the struggling team of MPs and put up a brave front to score 33 runs off 51 balls.

In comparison, the team of journalists had a pretty easy run. Sawan and Vikrant Gupta put up a partnership of 72 runs to take the score to 85 at the loss of a mere three wickets. The team of MPs did seem to make a comeback, taking four wickets in quick succession, though this celebration was short lived. The Journalists’ team wrapped up the game with two consecutive boundaries in the 13th over with four wickets to spare.

The final score of the Journalists’ team stood at 111 runs at the loss of six wickets. Sawan of CNN IBN was declared the Man of the Match for his knock of 37 off 29 balls. He received his trophy from wrestler Sushil Kumar and Rakhi from Magic Bus. Health Minister JP Nadda handed over the Winners and Runners Up trophies to the respective teams.

“Journalists always give politicians a difficult time at the Parliament so, they also gave us a difficult time at the cricket field but we lost a close match” says the TV personality and now an MP, Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress.

At the end of the tournament, players pledged to support every child’s right to life and good health and called on others to lend their voice to the cause. Specifically, they noted the importance of access to available interventions and promised to work toward ensuring children across the country were able to benefit from existing interventions.
