'Konkani has power to check threat of globalisation'

Konkani is one of the few languages which has successfully faced threat of colonialism and developed into a greater height, said senior Kannada litterateur Kum Veerabhadrappa.

Speaking at Konkani Sahitya Sammelan 2014 organised by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy here, he said “Konkani, Kodava and Tulu languages  were spoken during reign of Gupthas, Pallavas and Cholas. Kannada has helped in the development of Konkani language. Historians of Nagpur University and USA have found that there are Konkani words in two lines which were carved near the feet of Bahubali idol at Shravanabelagula.

There are around 70 lakh Konkani speaking people in the world.  Konkani is one of the 22 recognised languages of India and considered as the official language of Goa.”  He said “Konkani people act as ambassadors of Kannada language.”

He lauded the achievement of ‘Pai’s in banking and ‘Kamath’s in hotel business. They are very proud about their language and culture, moreover they are courageous. Just like Kannada, Konkani has the ability to check the threat of globalisation.

The government has given prominence for the development of the language by setting up a academy for it. However, there is a need for publishing Konkani dictionaries, he said.
