Makeshift stage collapses in school, 5 students injured

At least five students at the National Public School, Indiranagar, sustained minor injuries when the temporary stage they were rehearsing on collapsed on Monday.

According to a parent, a few students were practising on the stage assembled for a sporting event scheduled for Tuesday.

The stage was made up of four or five levels (stairs-like), and the topmost row gave way leading to the children falling on each other, the parent added.

A senior police officer from the East division, who visited the school after the incident, said, “Some three to five children have suffered minor injuries. So far, no one has registered a complaint, without which we cannot proceed. If a complaint is filed, we will take necessary action.”

The injured were shifted to CMH Hospital and Manipal Hospitals, the police said. A local resident said he had seen an ambulance rushing the injured to hospital, the police added.

When contacted, K P Gopalkrishna, Chairman, NPS, said the stage had not been completed and most of the children rehearsing at that time of the incident were from class 7. “There is nothing serious. We will go ahead with the event as scheduled,” he said.
