Rowdy held for making threat calls from prison

A notorious rowdy, currently lodged in the Bangalore Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara, on Monday allegedly made threat and ransom calls to a local politician from a mobile phone.

Palani, involved in as many as 13 criminal cases, phoned the politician from Wilson Garden and demanded ransom. He also warned him of dire consequences if  he failed to cough up the money, the police said.

The politician lodged a complaint with the Wilson Garden police who have taken Palani into custody. “We will register a separate case against him for using a mobile phone inside the prison. We are thinking of booking him under the Goonda Act,” a senior police officer said.

Palani was arrested by the Ashok Nagar police in connection with a murder case during the Assembly elections in 2013. He was accused of playing a role in the murder of Lokesh, a close associate of former deputy mayor Vasudevamurthy who had contested as the JD(S) candidate from the Shanthinagar constituency, the police said.

“It is not known how Palani managed to get a mobile phone inside the prison. He is said to have indulged in large-scale illegal activities inside the prison. He also masterminded a few crimes outside. We will dig out all such details during his interrogation,” the police added.

Trader harasses woman

The Cubbon Park police on Monday arrested Loganathan, 28, a businessman from Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, for harassing a woman doctor, following a complaint by her.
Having obtained the victim’s number from Justdial, Loganathan met her on a couple of occasions on the pretext of seeking treatment and started sending her text messages, the police said.

The victim, who initially responded casually to the messages, grew suspicious when he proposed to her. When she refused, he threatened her, the police said, adding that Loganathan even opened a Facebook account in the victim’s name and began sending objectional content.

“The doctor approached us three days ago and lodged a complaint. A special team arrested Loganathan from Tirupur. He was booked under IPC Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). He was produced before the judge who remanded him in judicial custody,” DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil said. The police are questioning the Justdial management for sharing the victim’s contact details with Loganathan, Patil said.
