BJP leaders, ministers to work on Christmas

Notwithstanding the school circular row, Union ministers and BJP MPs will end up having a working Christmas in their constituencies to publicise “good governance day”, an initiative to celebrate annually the  former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Office has circulated a note in the government that suggests that ministers and MPs should visit “sensitive districts and organise events on good governance and sanitation on December 25”. It would also mark Vajpayee’s 90th birthday.

Though December 25 is a gazetted holiday and the Parliament session would end on Tuesday,  the PMO suggests holding events such as seminars and spreading awareness about digital literacy as well. A senior minister, however, clarified the offices would remain closed  — perhaps to avoid a controversy that reportedly stemmed from a Union human resources ministry’s circular asking the schools to observe good governance day which was interpreted by opposition as a directive to keep academic institutions open.  The minister without getting into the details added that the officials would observe the day in some manner. Prime Minister Nanrendra Modi is expected to be in his Varanasi constituency on that day sending out a message that he would be working on Christmas too. Department of Personnel and Training is likely to come up with a detailed circular listing out activities that has to be performed on Thursday to make it eventful.
