Unaware of Good Governance Day, say VCs in State

The Centre’s mandate to observe December 25, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday, as Good Governance Day, did not cut much ice with higher education institutions in the State.

The Centre had suggested conducting debate contests, documentary screening to mark the day besides directing the educational institutions to send a report to Ministry for Human Resource Development in this regard.

The University Grants Commission, in its notice to vice chancellors of all universities, had asked them to ensure “oratory” competition was organised in universities and its affiliated colleges on December 25.

The prize money being Rs 15,000 for first prize, Rs 10,000 for second and Rs 5,000 for third prize.

The diktat, however, did not elicit the desired response from universities. Ironically, majority of vice chancellors contacted were not aware about Good Governance Day.
Mysore University Vice Chancellor Prof K S Rangappa said he was not aware about it.

Tumkur University Vice Chancellor Prof A H Rajasab too said they had not received any communication in this regard. “We have declared holiday on Friday and Saturday as well, since our staff had worked on two Sundays for academic activities.

Christmas is a national holiday. We cannot withhold people from taking off on that day.” Visvesvaraya Technological University had its own academic activities to complete and hence there were no activities exclusive for the day.

The university was holding valuation of semester exams and all evaluators were at work on Thursday, Vice Chancellor Dr H Maheshappa said.
