Minor kills herself, parents blame boy

Two days after her parents discovered that a senior at her school had befriended her, a 15-year-old girl hanged herself at her home in west Delhi’s Vikaspuri area on Wednesday.

The girl’s family staged a protest outside the Columbia School in Vikaspuri and the local police station on Thursday alleging that the 17-year-old boy was stalking and harassing her. 

Police said they managed to convince them that the matter would be pursued in all fairness.

A senior police officer, however, told Deccan Herald that initial probe has thrown up no evidence of either stalking or harassment by the class 11 boy. Instead it appears that the boy and girl were friends and were often spotted in school speaking to each other, said the officer.

Police also suspect that the girl could have resorted to suicide after being spoken to by her parents for “befriending the boy”.

“The girl’s parents learnt of their friendship two days ago from her friend. They then had a lengthy conversation with her at home, “said the officer.

“While we are unaware of what transpired between them at that time, we are probing if she was scolded by them and hence disturbed,” the officer added.

Police said the school authorities claimed that till a day ago neither the girl nor her parents approached them to complain about stalking or harassment. 

The girl had not mentioned about any harassment to her parents either, said the officer.

“The girl’s parents visited the school on Tuesday to complain to the authorities about stalking after learning of the possible friendship between the two. They were told by the teachers that the two were friends,” said the officer.

A few hours before the girl hanged herself at her home, her parents had also paid a visit to the boy to check his background, said the officer. 

They returned home to find their daughter hanging from the ceiling fan of her room. Police were subsequently informed and the body brought down.
