Westwood confident of strong BFC show

With Bengaluru FC coming off a long break, there are understandable fears that the squad might be rusty at the Federation Cup in Goa but coach Ashley Westwood said he was confident of a good show from the team.

“We are obviously going there with the intention of winning it but even if we don’t win it, I’m confident of us putting a good show.”

BFC open their Fed Cup campaign against Goan side Salgaocar on December 28 before games against Mohun Bagan (December 30), Shillong Lajong (January 2) and Pune (Jan 5).

Looking ahead to the new I-League season, which begins on January 17 – BFC have a home match against Dempo on that day – Westwood said that he has a much better squad as compared to last season.

“We have certainly strengthened our squad from last season. We have brought in Josh Walker as our marquee player. Apart from that we have a few solid additions (Udanta Singh and Eugeneson Lyngdoh).

The 38-year-old also rued the draw for the Club in the AFC Champions League. “The draw has been a tough one. We will be playing Johor (Malaysian champions) and it will be tough but we will go there and attack and see what we can do.

“We are not expected to win the Champions League and probably not even expected to qualify, so there is no pressure going into the game.”

BFC will be playing their home games under lights (all matches scheduled to start at 7.30 pm) at the Sree Kanteerava stadium while the Bangalore Football Stadium undergoes reconstruction ahead of the 2017 Under-17 World Cup.

While the club has introduced three membership packs - BFC Platinum, BFC Gold and BFC Silver - for its fans, the casual spectator can still pick up individual tickets through the website bookmyshow.com or from the box office and there will be 20,000 tickets on sale for every match.
