JOIN USSet ablaze by youths, teen dies of burns
A teen, who was set ablaze by some youths after she resisted their molestation bid in Varanasi, succumbed to her injuries in a hospital on Friday.
Sanno (name changed), class 12 student had sustained 90 per cent burn injuries. She breathed her last at the divisional hospital in Varanasi after battling for life for almost a week, police sources said.
Sources said a few days ago, three youths had tried to molest Sanno when she had gone out to fetch water from a tape near her residence at Lallapura area in Varanasi.
They were irked after she resisted their bid and shouted for help. They allegedly poured kerosene on her and set ablaze. Sanno sustained severe burn injuries before she could be rushed to the hospital.
Sanno’s father said earlier also, the youths had tried to molest his daughter on several occasions when she went to school.
“We had lodged complaints with the police but nothing happened,” he said. The family had also received threats after their daughter was set ablaze. Sanno's parent demanded death penalty for the accused.
Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and investigation was on. The three youths were later arrested.
Earlier, several girls had either been burnt alive for resisting rape or molestation bids . Many had killed themselves after such attempts in the state.
Despite assurances from Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, incidents of crimes against the women have not shown any decline in the state. The government has come under attack from the opposition parties for its alleged failure to check crimes against women.
