People in distress 'post' letters to god at N'gud

Of late, the deity of Srikanteshwara Swamy at Nanjangud temple, popularly known as Dakshina Kashi, is getting virtual devotees, besides the hordes of devotees visiting the temple throughout the year.

Apart from donations, devotees in distress are dropping letters (in Kannada) into the offering boxes at the temple complex, seeking divine intervention. Not willing to take chances, the temple management committee has decided to record the letters starting from December.

Recently, when nine of the total 24 boxes were opened, apart from Rs 86 lakh cash, 16 foreign currencies, gold and silver valuables, nine letters were found. On an average, five to six letters are found in the boxes every month, president of the management committee K S Mohan told Deccan Herald.

According to some of the interesting letters available with this paper, a devotee has scribbled as follows: “Sri Nanjundeshwara Swamy, Thande nanage enu beda. Ninna nanu kelod ishte.... nanna Navya nanage beku, avalu illa andre nanage thumba kashta... avara thayi oppabeku... (Father (addressing god), I don’t want anything. What I want is my Navya. It will be difficult for me... Her mother should agree for the proposal).

In another letter, a devotee has promised to fulfil a vow, if her husband quits drinking, smoking, chewing gukta and other bad habits. She also wants the god to punish those who have been trying to create a rift in her family.

In a joint memorandum to god, a section of pourakarmikas have complained against a local body member for cheating women in the name of securing benefits for them. The said leader has been usurping widow pension, especially after doling out promises to the beneficiaries.

Interestingly, another devotee has reminded the god that he has been visiting the temple on every ‘hunnime’ (full moon day) and wants the lord to grant loan within the next ‘hunnime’. A litigant has prayed for his victory in a land dispute in a court. He has mentioned the case number and also the year, since which he is awaiting justice. There are also instances of people dropping invitations for house warming ceremonies in the box.
