'I love listening to light music'

Javed Ali has come a long way as a playback singer. Born and brought up in Delhi, he started singing with his father Ustad Hamid Hussain, a popular qawwali singer and made his debut in Bollywood by singing for ‘Beti No 1’.

The ‘Jashn-E-Bahara’ singer, who has many popular hits in Bollywood, was in the City recently for a performance and spoke about his journey as a playback singer.

“I come from a family of musicians. My forefathers and father are all singers. So naturally, I developed a love for singing. I am a huge fan of Pakistani ghazal singer Ustad Ghulam Ali who happens to be my guru,” he says. Born as Javed Hussain, he changed his name to Javed Ali inspired by Ustad Ghulam Ali.

“My father is my first guru. I developed an interest in music because of him. I also love listening to the ghazals of Ustad Ghulam Ali and the songs of Lata Mangeshkar,” says the singer. Having been in Bollywood for over a decade now, the singer says that he had little liking for classical music.

“I am not a huge fan of classical music. I love listening to light music. I came to Mumbai for a vacation and that is how playback singing happened. The first song I sang was for ‘Beti No 1’ in 2000 and I learnt a great deal about singing from everyone. My first hit was in 2005 with ‘Kajra Re’, that I sang with other versatile singers,” he recollects. “I have achieved a lot as a singer and want to achieve more and more in the coming years,” he adds.

Speaking about the challenges he faces while singing in different languages, he says, “It is quite challenging to sing in languages that are not known to you. When I sing songs in Tamil, Telugu or Kannada, I ask the music director to explain the mood and emotions of the song. I then get the script done in Hindi and try to sing in that mood,” he indicates.

With many hits to his credit, the singer says that all the songs he has sung so far are dear to him. “‘Jashn-E-Bahara’, ‘Tum Tak’, ‘Arziyan’, ‘Daawat-E-Ishq’ and ‘Aa Jaa O Meri Tamanna’ are a few of my favourites,”he adds.

All praises for Bengaluru, he says, “I am in love with the weather of the City. This is a beautiful City with beautiful people. It’s my father’s favourite city too.” The good looking singer sings off with a message for the aspiring playback singers — “Be honest. Be calm while you are working and success will come to you.”
