Coconut Grove restaurant to face police action over lack of CCTV cameras

Last Updated 29 December 2014, 19:59 IST

The management of Coconut Grove restaurant on Church Street will face action for not installing CCTV cameras on  their premises in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Police Commissioner.

A low-intensity explosive had gone off in front of the restaurant Sunday night.
“The Coconut Grove management has not installed CCTV cameras. They should have followed the order issued by the police commissioner. We will take action against them for their failure to comply with our order,” Police Commissioner M N Reddi told reporters on Monday.

A set of guidelines for ladies service bars was issued a few months ago.
One of them being mandatory installation of CCTV cameras and preserving footage for one month period. The rule was later made compulsory for all bars, bar and restaurants and other liquor joints eight months ago. However, the Coconut Grove management violated the order and did not instal CCTV cameras.

Meanwhile, the police are analysing CCTV footage from various locations in and around Church Street, MG Road, Brigade Road and St Mark’s Road.

There could be a connection between the terror attack at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on December 28, 2005, and the Church Street blast, as both
incidents occurred on the same date.

“There could be a parallel between the Church Street blast and the Guwahati blast. The attack might have a link with the arrest of Masroor Biswas Mehdi, handler of IS tweet account. It is too early to say anything. We have kept all options open.”

A few persons have been taken into custody for questioning. They are being interrogated to gather leads, Reddi said.

A police team from Tamil Nadu which arrived here exchanged information with the City police. “We will compare all terror attacks that have taken place in the past to figure out the modus operandi,” Reddi added.

A Forensic Science Laboratory team has submitted a detailed report regarding materials used to prepare the bomb.
