Illegal flex boards: Mayor warns criminal action

Mayor N Shanthakumari on Friday said that criminal cases will be filed against the officials of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, who fail to take steps to remove the illegal flex boards, banners and cutouts, in their zones in two weeks.

“I have received a letter from Upa Lokayukta who sought to know about the steps taken by the civic agency, till date, in removing the flex boards and banners. I have directed the officers to get into action the mode. The officers who do not pay heed will be in trouble as their names will be forwarded to Upa Lokayutka. The latter will take action accordingly,” she said.

Information sought

Mayor said that she had directed the Palike officers to give her details of the number of illegal flex boards, advertisements among others, two months back.

“We have information on illegal hoardings in Rajarajeshwari Nagar zone so far. About 995 flexes, 148 banners, buntings extending 3,450 metres, and 540 posters have been removed in RR Nagar zone,” she added.

Shanthakumari said that she will speak with special commissioner on deploying more staff for removing the illegal banners and advertisements.

“In cities such as Chennai and Delhi, banners and flexes in public place are banned. We are planning to implement such rule in the City. The issue will be discussed in Council meeting following which a final decision would be taken,” she added.
