PM invites Nobel winners to stay in India

Prime Minister Nareandra Modi on Saturday asked a few Nobel laureates to explore the possibility of spending some time in India to ignite the young minds.

In a brief meeting with the Nobel laureates and equivalent award winning mathematicians of Indian origin on the sidelines of the Indian Science Congress here, the prime minister requested them to find out avenues to come to India more often and interact with the students.

The laureates who were in the meeting included Ada Yonath (chemistry, 2009), who was the first woman scientist to win the top prize in 45 years, Paul Nurse (physiology/medicine, 2001), Randy Schekman (physiology/medicine 2013), Muhammad Yunus (peace, 2006) and Robin Warren (physiology/medicine 2005).

Young Indian Fields medallist Manjul Bhargava too was in the meeting with the prime minister. Awarded for excellence in mathematics, the Fields Medal is often dubbed as Nobel of mathematics. Three other top Indian mathematicians – S R S Vardhan, Subhash Khot and Madhu 

Sudan – were present at the meeting. All of them were also felicitated by Modi at the inaugural session of the Congress.

A pavilion on the life and work of engineer statesman Sir M Visvesvaraya is part of Pride of India exhibition.
