AAP cancels ticket as nominee conceals business details

Just hours later, he is spotted at BJP event

Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday cancelled the ticket of its Wazirpur Assembly constituency candidate Suresh Bhardwaj for allegedly concealing facts concerning the businesses he owns.

Later in the day, Bhardwaj was found present at a BJP event. He is a former BJP councillor.

A large section of party workers had expressed their “displeasure” after the party announced his candidature in its final list of eight candidates, AAP’s Delhi unit convenor Ashutosh said.

Party’s local Assembly-level coordinator Rajesh Gupta will now be contesting on the AAP ticket, he added.

According to sources, the decision to cancel Bhardwaj’s ticket came after the party ran an internal investigation on allegations concerning a factory he runs.

AAP version
An AAP statement said: “The party has dropped Suresh Bhardwaj from its list following some prima facie negative report received against him from the area.”

Barely, few hours after the party announced cancelling his ticket, he was seen at the launch of a digital raths (chariots) showing 3D images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and playing his speech as part of the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections.

He told reporters that he never intended to contest on AAP’s ticket and regreted having switched sides.

Bhardwaj’s son is the vice-president of Delhi BJP’s Keshavpuram district and his daughter-in-law is a councillor from Ashok Vihar.

He was on Saturday quoted in an English newspaper saying “son and daughter-in-law will join AAP soon”.

This is not the first time the party has dropped a candidate from its list of nominees.

Earlier cases
During the last Assembly polls, the party had withdrawn support from its Rajouri Garden candidate Pritpal Singh Saluja, after discovering a criminal case against him.

The party, however, could not withdraw his name as the last date of withdrawal of names was already over.
