The announcement of the Karnataka State Film Awards has brought joy to art enthusiasts in the city, with two persons from Mysuru bagging top honours.

The awards for Poornachandra Tejaswi and Naveen Sajju, who won ‘Best Music Director’ and ‘Best Playback Singer (male)’ respectively were announced on Sunday.

Both the awards were for their contribution to the popular film ‘Lucia’, which was one of the biggest hits of 2014.

For both Tejaswi and Naveen, this was the first opportunity in the film industry. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Tejaswi said, the award was not expected, as it was his first movie. “However, the music for the movie has won several awards, including Filmfare and Radio Mirchi award,” he said.

Tejaswi said, he had contacted Pavan Kumar, director of ‘Lucia’ over Facebook, after Pavan started working on the crowd-funded movie. “I had sent a composition to Pavan over Facebook. He was impressed and gave me other assignments related to the movie,” he added.

Naveen, who is pursuing B Music at Gangubai Hangal University, said, though he was involved in theatre, he never expected to work for movies. “All I wanted was to sing for orchestras and plays. But, the opportunity provided during the making of ‘Lucia’ opened the doors for me in the film industry,” he said.

Following the success of ‘Lucia’, both Tejaswi and Naveen, who hail from Srirangapatna in Mandya district, have been offered several films.

Both of them have been involved in Niranthara Foundation in the city, which works for theatre.

While Tejaswi is involved with Niranthara since a decade or so, Naveen learned Hindustani music at the institute.
