Ice-man Dhoni the cynosure

Last Updated 04 January 2015, 20:11 IST

It’s not often that a player who is not going to be part of a Test match gets more attention than those who are going to be part of the playing 11.

M S Dhoni was the cynosure during India’s first practice session in five days here at the SCG on Sunday.

A large number of Indian fans reserved the biggest cheers for Dhoni along with Virat Kohli while the TV cameramen and photographers tailed the 33-year-old wherever he moved.

Reports in some section of the Indian media that Dhoni quit because of the Ravi Shastri-Virat Kohli clique had the local scribes scanning each of his moves. It is rumored that Dhoni, the first to come and among the last to leave the ‘nets’, may still play here if reserve wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha becomes unavailable for selection through some unforeseen reason but the retired player didn’t put on his pads, either wicketkeeping or batting.

The Jharkhandi, however, bowled for over half an hour and sometimes quite nippily. Dhoni is going to be with the team till the match starts and he will remain in Australia before he joins the team for the tri-series starting January 16.
