DH photoAs many as 17 persons, all residents of Aland and other villages in Aland taluk of Gulbarga district were killed and and 25 injured, when a mini lorry in which they were travelling overturned after hitting the median on the main road near Akkalkot Naka in the wee hours of Tuesday. Most of the people reportedly died due to asphyxia after they were buried under the heap of jowar bags in the mini lorry.

Police were chasing the vehicle in which 42 persons were travelling, police said. The victims were labourers from Gulbarga district and were on their way to Pune to work in a brick kiln. The injured have been admitted to Solapur and Akkalkot hospitals and the condition of some of them is said to be critical. The driver and the cleaner of the mini lorry are absconding.


In Kudur four people, including three of a family, were killed in a head-on collision between their car and a iron rod-laden truck near Talekere on NH 48 in the early hours of Tuesday. Police said Vinay (35), an employee of Varada Pharma Company, his wife Neeriksha (30) and Anagha (four) and car driver Madhukar (30) were killed in the accident, which occurred due to careless driving by the truck driver.


In Davangere a bride and another woman were killed and16 injured in a collision between a tractor and truck near Shiramagondanahalli in Davangere district. Bride Asha (18) and others were proceeding to Chitradurga to get married in the mass marriage in Chitradurga's Murughamutt.  Muddamma (22) was also killed in the accident. 

After a bus had brushed the tractor, the occupants decided to rest for some time as they thought it was a bad omen. However, the truck rammed into the tractor as they were resting, killing two of them. The groom's party was travelling in another tractor.
