Vinton Cerf to help govt in 'Digital India'

Keen to extend support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative, Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Vinton Cerf on Tuesday discussed with the government, ways in which it can be useful in bringing more and more Indian businesses to access the Web.

“How technology can help improve the country’s GDP growth and provide more jobs? These are some challenges… The aspirations of the new Indian government and its initiatives of Digital India are very exciting and significant but there are some challenges too. How technology can help improve country’s GDP growth and add to job creation…,” Cerf said at a Ficci event.

He said that Google was interested in being helpful. “We have some ideas. We want to share with them (with the government) to find out which of them makes sense. Maybe, they will have better ideas than us,” Cerf told reporters later.

Cerf who met Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, did not divulge what transpired in the meeting but said that the company had initiated discussions with the government.

“My impression after two days discussions is you (the government) already have a well laid out plan. Now you have to execute,” he told reporters.
