Tharoor alleges domestic help was harassed by cops

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor alleged that the Delhi Police had tried to force his staff confess that he and his domestic help Narayan Singh had murdered Sunanda Pushkar.

In November 2014, Tharoor had called up Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi and also sent an e-mail saying that the police must stop interrogating and harassing his staff.

In the e-mail, Tharoor alleged that the police had even physically assaulted Narayan. Four policemen had interrogated Narayan for 16 hours on November 7 and for 14 hours on November 8.

On both the days, Tharoor alleged that Narayan was physically assaulted repeatedly. “Worse, one of your officers used traumatic physical assault to try and intimidate Narayan into confessing that he and I murdered my wife,” Tharoor wrote.

Tharoor also recalled that he expressed his concerns to Bassi over telephone on November 8. In the e-mail on November 12, the former Union minister requested Bassi to take
immediate and appropriate action against the unlawful misconduct of the officer concerned.

“My staff and I have always made ourselves available for any kind of inquiry and investigation but the recent behaviour of the officers towards my staff is a matter of serious concern to any law abiding citizen. Please look into the matter personally and ensure that the unvarnished truth comes out in this case,” Tharoor had written.

Tharoor had also said that he had complete trust and faith in the police and that he was committed to fully cooperating with the investigations to ensure the timely completion of the inquiry.

Taking action over the e-mail, Bassi had told Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra to initiate a probe over the allegations.

“I spoke to my officers and none of the allegations were confirmed during our probe. I would say that we do not use unlawful means like torture during interrogation,” Bassi told Deccan Herald.
