Substandard asphalting of Vyalikaval Road, Okalipuram Road and Vatal Nagaraj Road has irked the members of the public works committee, who have sought an explanation from the BBMP engineers.

The Palike has spent Rs 9 crore on each of these roads but the quality was found to be inferior and unable to withstand even for a year.

During the inspection of various public works on Thursday, the committee chairperson Geetha Vivekananda and other members noticed that Rs 3 crore was spent on a 2.67-km-long road from Vyalikaval 2nd Main Road to Guttahalli BDA Junction through Guttahalli Dattatreya Temple.

The footpaths have given way while asphalt was not laid at some places.

At some places, the building owners spent from their pocket to repair the side drains and footpaths. These irregularities made Vivekananda ask the BBMP engineers whether they spent the money on the project. She asked the BBMP executive engineer to submit all the details including specifications of the work.

Another road from Harekrishna Road to Sheshadripuram Circle, Rajiv Gandhi Circle and Platform Road on which Rs 3 crore has been spent came under the scanner. The asphalt laid on the 1.47-km-long road was way below the specifications mentioned in the contract.

She directed the engineers to improve the road as per the conditions laid in the contract. The same was the condition of road linking Vatal Nagaraj Road with Rajkumar Road junction on which another Rs 3 crore has been spent.

The members found the thickness of the road way below the specification near Sujatha Theatre.
