Bhyrappa supports religious reconversions

Last Updated 11 January 2015, 20:41 IST

Noted Kannada writer S L Bhyrappa on Sunday justified the “Ghar Wapsi” programme of the Sangh Parivar, asserting that if religious conversions were acceptable, then religious reconversions should also be acceptable.

Speaking to mediapersons here, he said it was wrong to convert people by luring them with false promises. However, there is nothing wrong in accepting the principles and tenets of any religion wholeheartedly and getting converted.

Expressing his views on formulating a cultural policy, he said that such a thought could come up only in communist nations. Governments cannot dictate terms to writers, artists and musicians to write, express or sing amid restrictions.

“Isn’t it against the spirit of democracy?” he said. He said that even if 15 per cent of the population opted for inter-caste marriages, castes would still die a slow death.
