Two labourers working on an underground pipe supplying water to the cooling tower of Yermaras Thermal Power Station (second unit) near Raichur were buried alive after mud caved in on them on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Mukhilesh, 25, and Matin, 53, both from West Bengal. Two more workers—Syed Hussain Nuziulla, 58, and Syed-ul-Hassan, 25, —were injured in the incident. They have been admitted to the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences. A cameraman of a private television channel sustained a head injury when hundreds of workers threw stones at the ambulance which had arrived at the spot to shift the injured persons to the hospital.

Assistant Commissioner M P Maruthi, who visited the spot, said that according to the workers at the site a total of six men were engaged in erecting iron rods along the underground pipe which carries hot water to the cooling tower when the mud caved in. Two of them managed to escape while two were trapped. Earthmovers would be deployed to remove the debris to get a clear picture of the accident spot, the AC added.

G C Mahendra, Chief Engineer of Civil Department, YTPS, explained that the 2.7-metre diameter pipe was being laid for a length of 350 metre for carrying hot water to the cooling tower.

“Water used for producing thermal power gets heated. This is supplied to the cooling tower where huge fans cool the water. The water so cooled is utilised again. Iron rods are erected all along and welded to the pipe and the labourers were busy doing this job,” he said.
The work on the second unit was being executed by BHEL  and the job on the pipeline was entrusted to Prasad And Power Mac, a sub-contractor, the engineer said.
