UVCE team shines at go-karting c'ship

A team of students from the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) has secured the overall sixth position in the National Go-Karting Championship 2014, that was held at Kari Motor Speedway at Coimbatore recently.

The ‘Team eMpower - UVCE’ beat the rivals from a number of well known engineering colleges in the State to emerge as champions while finished overall sixth in the competition which saw 90 teams from across the country battle for top honours.

The national-level competition was organized by Indian Society for New Era of Engineers (ISNEE).

The team received guidance from Dr N Lakshmana Swamy, Chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UVCE and Dr. H.C.Chittappa, Asst. Professor and Faculty advisor of eMpower UVCE, who also helped in designing the racing vehicle.

“Safety was our top priority. With the support from faculty, seniors, parents and by God’s grace we made it to the finish line,” said Varun C, a 4th year mechanical engineering student and a member of Team eMpower.

Such projects needed
Commenting on the need for such competitions to improve practical skills of students, Chittappa said, “There is a lot of gap between college education and the industry. Such projects help fill that gap since the students should do things on their own, select designs and approach vendors.”

The 23-member team took 6 months to build the racing vehicle at a cost of Rs 80,000.  The entire effort of the team was sponsored by Foundation for Excellence,  a non-profit organization, that provides funds for higher education and alumni organisations, UVCE Foundation and Vision UVCE.
