Scientific advisor bats for closed N-fuel plant

R Chidambaram,Principal ScientificAdvisor to the Union Government on Friday advocated the development of a closed nuclear fuel cycle power plant to prepare for the future. He said that the threat of climate change had become a real threat from being an academic issue.

Chidambaramwas delivering the 26th Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture on ‘Power and Development’on the occasion of Institute Day celebrations at the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in the City. He said that closed nuclear fuel cycle power
plants were capable of reutilising spent nuclear fuel through reprocessing and
using them again for power generation.

“Nuclear fuel has already been identified as a mitigation technology for climate
change. To make it sustainable, closed fuel cycle is the way forward,” he said.
Stating that India had decades of experience in this technique, Chidambaram
said that waiting for proven technologies was detrimental to the goal of a knowledge economy.

“Unless India gets habituated to new pioneering tech, there will benoknowledge
economy,” he said.
