Man kills wife, her mother with grinding stone

In a macabre double murder, a 38-year-old man bludgeoned his wife and mother-in-law with a grinding stone at their home in Shivapura, Peenya, early on Wednesday, resulting in their instant death. He then latched the door and sneaked out of the house even as his two children were asleep in another bedroom.

Around 1.30 am, Basavaraj fought with his wife of more than five years, Chandrakala, 23, and mother-in-law Omkaramma, 45. In a fit of rage, he ran to the kitchen, picked up a grinding stone and smashed it on his wife. When Omkaramma tried to intervene, Basavaraj pounced on the same stone and heaved it at her head. Both the victims died instantly. Basavaraj then latched the door of the bedroom where he had murdered them and sneaked out of the house. His six-year-old son and two-year-old daughter were sleeping in another bedroom at the time, the police said.

The gruesome murders, the police continued, were the last in a series of abominable acts by Basavaraj who works as a tractor driver for a living. Ever since he had married Chandrakala, he kept quarrelling with her, pestering her to get money from her parents. He would also fight with her over some personal matters. A few years ago, Chandrakala got so fed up that she deserted him and moved to Bengaluru, along with her mother and children. Her sister, Kavitha, had helped her get a house and land a job at a garment factory nearby.

On January 2, 2015, Basavaraj came to visit his children and began living in the house. But he fought with his wife and mother-in-law again, Kavitha stated in a complaint to the police. The murders emerged in the morning when the children woke up and found their mother and grandmother lying in a pool of blood. They ran to Kavitha, who lives close-by, and narrated the incident to her. She then called neighbours for help. The police reached the place soon.

The family hails from Hosadurga in Chitradurga district and had been living there until Chandrakala decided to desert Basavaraj, and moved to Bengaluru. The Peenya police have registered a case and are looking out for Basavaraj.
