Cops arrest man who killed wife, her mother

Basavaraj, 38, the tractor driver who had escaped after brutally bludgeoning his wife and mother-in-law with a grinding stone at their home in Shivapura, Peenya, on Wednesday, was arrested on Thursday, the police said.

He was arrested from his native place, Hosadurga in Chitradurga district, early on Thursday. The police had formed a team and discovered that he had fled to his hometown. They brought him to Bengaluru and grilled him.

Police said that Basavaraj was jobless and a drunkard. He had been pestering his wife, Chandrakala, 23, to get money from her parents. In the early hours of Wednesday, he had a heated argument with wife and mother-in-law Omkaramma, 45. In a fit of rage, he picked up a grinding stone from the kitchen and crushed both the women with it. He then sneaked out of the house.
