View from the gallery: Sakshi

Last Updated 28 January 2015, 10:41 IST

Sakshi Gallery is one of the pre-eminent galleries in the country. Over the last three decades, it has hosted exceptional exhibitions and events, working closely with important Indian and international artists and  introducing many emerging ones.

It has held shows of Indian art all over the world and has introduced to the Indian audience work of illustrious international artists such as El Anatsui, Gregory Crewdson and Julian Opie. The Mumbai-based gallery has reference books on art and occasionally hosts plays, performances, lectures and discussions.

Geetha Mehra, director of Sakshi Gallery, shares her views on IAF:

On the importance of participating in art fairs for a gallery.

High visibility. A lot of traction from collectors and other visitors. It’s great to have so much art all under one roof. Makes it easy for collectors to choose from. Also, it is a great time for us to bond with the art fraternity, be it collectors, the trade itself, media etc.

How do you think IAF has evolved over time?

They have a lot more visitors. Their infrastructure and logistical support has vastly improved. Their outreach programmes are much better.

What are the three best aspects of IAF?
It has become a focal point for a lot of other art-related activities in Delhi and in other parts of the country as well. A number of museum directors and curators now make it a point to visit the fair. This gives visibility for the artists displayed in the fair booths. Their outreach programme is wonderful as well as their projects.

Three items on your wish list from IAF this year? (Apart from “Sales, sales, more sales…!!!”)

Hoping that we make new contacts with potential collectors and also curators who might visit. There are international visitors and also a lot more people from other cities in India consider the event important enough to make the visit. That all participating galleries go back happy and come back for other editions of the fair.

Who are the artists you are representing this year?

Valay Shende, Rekha Rodwittiya, Surendran Nair, Anirban Mitra, El Anatsui, Dhruva Mistry, Vivek Vilasini and Manjunath Kamath.
