The controversy over recovery of 104 bodies from Ganga barely subsided when the discovery of over  hundred skeletons inside police lines campus in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district on Thursday triggered panic among the officials.

According to sources, the skeletons were kept in plastic bags inside a room close to servants’ quarters and the police station in the campus. “The skeletons have been found in 20-25 plastic bags,” a senior police official in Unnao said.

Officials said that the skeletons may have been kept for the purpose of viscera examination. “The area from where the skeletons were recovered used to have hospital a few years ago”, the officials claimed.

They, however, were unable to answer when asked if the entire body needed to be preserved for viscera examination.  Another official said that the skeletons could have been of the bodies which might have not been identified.

“The room has been sealed until further investigation”, the officials said.

Senior officials have assured an investigation into the matter. “We will investigate the matter”, said Unnao police chief R K Yadav.

The opposition parties BJP and Congress have demanded a thorough probe into the skeleton recovery. “A high level investigation is essential to unearth the true facts...we cannot rule out smuggling of body parts”, said BJP legislator Pankaj Gupta.

Congress party has also demanded an independent probe into the matter. A few days ago, as many as 104 bodies had been recovered from Ganges in Unnao district.
