State government has taken adequate measures to support fisherwomen across Karnataka, said Udupi MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj.

Speaking after inaugurating the mega fisherwomen conference, the MLA said the fisherwomen who were stronger and more able than men, worked hard to sustain their livelihood.

“They are role models for any human being who aspires for self-reliance and sincerity,” he added. The MLA added that measures had been taken to clear hurdles that hindered the construction of women fish markets in the district.

The plan was envisioned by the former UPA government. The national fisheries bond was created under Krishi Vikas Yojana and Rs two crore was released for women fish markets in Udupi. Besides Rs 10 lakh is allotted for all small fish markets, Madhwaraj said.

He added that Rs three lakh was released to construct roofs of the Udupi and Beedanagudde fish markets. He also said that he would talk to chief minister to provide pension facility to fisherwomen.

A list of the demands and requirements of the fisherwomen in the coastal region has been given to senior Congress leader and State incharge Digvijaya Singh, who in turn will pressure the chief minister to consider the demands, the legislator said. He added that he would also take a delegation comprising fisherwomen from the coastal region to the chief minister.

The MLA added that he had raised the issue with deputy commissioner over the fish shops that have come up across the district and are adversely affecting the fisherwomen.

“The deputy commissioner has assured to take action in this regard by holding talks with gram panchayats and urban local bodies,” he said and added that the State government had raised the amount released under Matsyahraya Yojane up to Rs 1.20 lakh against the earlier Rs 75,000.

The MLA assured that the provision to provide insulated boxes to the fisherwomen, which was stopped, would be continued. However, the boxes will be made available depending on the demand.

Madhwaraj said he had also spoken to chief minister over effective implementation of three per cent loan scheme (up to Rs 50,000) to fisherwomen. Ten veteran fisherwomen were facilitated on the occasion.
