Last Updated 01 February 2015, 19:16 IST

The Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (ComedK) conducted the Post Graduate Entrance Test 2015 (PGET) for medical and dental courses on Sunday.

As many as 11,293 candidates wrote the medical entrance and 4,124 candidates appeared for the dental entrance test.

The test, held for seats in 12 medical and 19 dental colleges across the State, was conducted at 27 centres in the City from 10 am to 1 pm. The medical entrance test saw an attendance of 83 per cent; out of the 13615 applicants, only 11,293 attended the test. The dental entrance test saw a higher turn out where 92 per cent of the registered candidates turned up for the exam; out of the 4,479 applicants, about 4,124 attended the test.

The ComedK exam conducted in the State attracts a large number of candidates from outside Karnataka. According to candidates who took the exam, the fee structure is lower in private colleges in Karnataka compared to that of several other states. The higher number of private colleges and the fact that several states do not have a state entrance test, contribute to the candidates from outside Karnataka. Added to that, candidates also consider Bengaluru to be a safe destination for higher education.

Viveka from Punjab, one of the candidates who wrote the ComedK entrance test, has already cleared the All India Pre-Medical / Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT) and is aspiring for an anaesthesia seat. Since Punjab does not have a state entrance test, she took the ComedK entrance to have an additional option for admissions, she said. Rahul, a candidate from Ahmednagar has written five entrance tests this year. “I heard from my seniors that Karnataka colleges offer decent quality education. I have written five entrance tests in all this time including Christian Medical College (CMC) Ludhiana, CMC Vellore, Diplomate of National Board- Centralised Entrance Test (DNB CET) and the All India Pre-Medical / Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT). I hope to secure an ophthalmology seat.”

While the difficulty level of the exam would entirely depend on the candidate's preparation for the exam, several candidates felt the format of questions in the ComedK entrance was direct and hence was a bit easier to crack compared to that of the national entrance test.

About twenty students were not allowed to write the exam as they did not possess all the required documents and identity proofs. Apart from this, there were no untoward incidents reported, said ComedK officials. The rank list will be notified by the ComedK on February 24.
