Many of the Veerashiva leaders from across all political parties on Monday opposed the State government’s move to conduct caste census and demanded that the government should drop its plan.

At a meeting convened by Veerashiva Mahasabha to discuss preparations to be made for holding an all-India Veerashiva convention, the community leaders said that the proposed census will divide society on caste lines.

Some of them even said that the census is aimed at dividing people belonging to Veerashiva community, sources in the Mahasabha said.
The meeting is also seen as a show of strength by the community leaders aimed at creating their own space in the government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah dispensation.

Horticulture Minister Shamanur Shivashankarappa, who is the president of Mahasabha, chaired the meeting. IT and BT Minister S R Patil, Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar and senior Congress leader Veeranna Mattikatti are among the leaders who participated in the meeting, the sources added.

The convention is likely to be held in March. Date and venue have not been decided yet, the sources said.
