Textbooks on woman achievers on the anvil

Last Updated 03 February 2015, 20:56 IST

Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has directed the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to bring out two books on lesser-known freedom fighters and women achievers.

However, it is not clear how these new text books, about people, who did not get their due recognition, would be incorporated into the existing school curriculum.

The minister gave the directive to the school text book writer agency at its general council meeting here on Tuesday.  While she suggested the title of the proposed book on freedom fighters as “Veer Gatha”, meaning tales of the brave, the title of the book on women achievers will be worked out later.

Irani asked the NCERT to compile the book on those who “sacrificed their life” during the freedom struggle in consultation with the Defence Ministry. “Addressing the NCERT's general council, the minister said it should compile a book in consultation with the Ministry of Defence on persons who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our nation,” said a ministry official.

The suggestion to compile a book on “women achievers” came from a council member, and was immediately accepted by the minister, added the official.
