Fresh rainfall and snowfall in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir led to an increase in minimum temperatures across the state on Sunday, providing respite from the intense cold wave.

An official of the Met department said tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam and north Kashmir’s Kupwara town experienced fresh snowfall while most other parts of the Valley received rain.

Gulmarg, which received 11 cm of fresh snowfall and 22 mm of rainfall during the night, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius against the previous night’s minus 7.2 degrees, he said. Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which received 2 cm of snowfall and 1.6 mm of rainfall, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1 degree Celsius against previous night’s minus 6.5 degrees.

Srinagar, which recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.9 degree Celsius, slightly up from minus 1.5 degrees the previous night, received 4 mm rainfall during the night, the official said.

Night temperature also increased in Leh town in Ladakh where the minimum temperature settled at minus 6.6 degrees Celsius against minus 10.6 degrees of previous night, he said. Kargil, also in Ladakh region, recorded a low of minus 15 degrees Celsius, four degrees up from the previous night’s minus 19 degrees. The town continues to be the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Met office has predicted generally dry weather for the next few days.
