Walkers oppose construction of new toilets at Cubbon Park

Last Updated 08 February 2015, 20:23 IST

Regular walkers at Cubbon Park seem unhappy with the ongoing construction of new toilets on the premises. They opine that even the existing toilets are poorly maintained.

Walkers are mainly irked by the fact that toilets are being constructed at the entrance of the park. “It is unpleasant to see toilets right at the entrance. There is plenty of space inside the park. Why can’t the Horticulture department consider utilising space inside the park,” said Kitty Thanikaimoni, a regular walker.

Construction work has been going on for a few days and a even a ‘Pay and Use’ toilet facility is in place. Walkers rued that maintenance of old toilets is not up to the mark and feared that new toilets would also end up being poorly maintained.

“A few months after the construction, the toilets will emanate a stench if they are not well-maintained. Hence, the department should construct toilets at a discreet location where it does not obstruct the path of walkers,” said Mary Joseph, another regular
walker.

Ironically, when the Horticulture department officials were contacted, they maintained that walkers had themselves approached them to build more toilets.

Mahantesh Murgod, Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture (Cubbon Park), said the prefabricated toilets were set up near the entrance so that people can easily
locate/access it.

They will be pay-and-use toilets once functional and will be maintained by a private firm.
