Last Updated 09 February 2015, 02:21 IST

She is genetically male, as she has XY chromosomes pattern  and no ovaries.

Thirty-five-year-old Saroj (name changed), who, owing to genetic mutation, was born with an infantile uterus and streak gonads (non-functional), delivered twins at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut town a couple of days ago.

“This patient had a very rare intersex disorder wherein she carried XY sex chromosome pattern (46 XY), found in males only...the females have 46 XX chromosomes”, said Dr Sunil Jindal, under whose supervision she was treated.

Speaking to Deccan Herald over the phone, Dr Jindal said that the patient, a resident of Gurgaon who had been married for seven years, does not go through menstrual cycle.

Saroj’s husband sought to know if his wife could bear a child. “It was a big challenge for us,” said Dr Jindal, whose wife, Anshu Jindal, was a gynaecologist.

“The challenge before us was to develop the uterus to a level that menstruation could take place...the next bigger challenge was to develop the uterus to facilitate pregnancy”, he said.
“She was given hormonal and endocrinal treatment for six months...embryos were
developed in human culture lab with donor eggs and husband’s sperms,” he said.

Dr Jindal said that the developing embryos were implanted in an already prepared uterus.
