Getting into Aero India show in Bengaluru to be easier this time

One may find it easy to drive to the venue of Aero India 2015 in Bengaluru this time with less obtrusive security checks at gates.

But think twice about taking in illegal items. With thorough checking at the gates becoming unfeasible due to the volume of vehicles reaching the venue, the security officials now want it to be done at the parking areas.

At a recent meeting to review the security preparedness for the mid-February event, Bengaluru Police said thorough checking at the entry point was not a feasible option due to congestion of vehicles. They wanted “some equipment to be kept in the parking area to check the vehicles at random to build psychological pressure on the public,” according to the minutes of the meeting.

“This would help in managing the traffic situation at entry gates,” it said. The Defence Exhibition Organisation has agreed to the suggestion and it will be included in the security plan. During Aero India 2007, there were traffic jams of up to 16 km from the entry gates due to numerous checkpoints. Last time, the traffic snarl was limited to 2 km.

These and other security measures were discussed at the recent meeting to review security for the event, which has at least visitors from 109 countries. Top officials of the Ministries of Defence and Home, CISF, Bengaluru Police, National Disaster Management Authority and others attended the meeting. Ensuring better security for the event, it was also decided to install 24 X-Ray machines, an increase from 10 during the 2013 show.

In a bid to decongest the venue, RTVs and small vehicles will be used as ferry service this time in place of big buses. Such vehicles could move faster and have manoeuvrability for making more trips to ferry general commuters.

At the review meeting, sources said, it was also mentioned that there will be aerobatic teams from Sweden, Czech Republic and the UK to “add value”to the show and make it more attractive.

The US has emerged as the biggest participator followed by France, whose participation has increased due to a number of various companies participating in the show. Belgium is also looking for establishing a big pavilion, sources said.
