Arjun pockets title

Bengaluru boy Arjun Maini won the Denny Hulme trophy in the Toyota Racing Series held in Taupo Motorsports Park, New Zealand, on Sunday.

Arjun clinched the feature race of Round 4 with a lead of one third of a second over Russia’s Artem Markelov.

In race no 4 of the weekend, Maini started on pole and put his skills to good use after French driver Brandon Maisano rolled his car at the first corner. Maini made no mistake on the restart, judging his sprint perfectly to take an instant five-second lead that he extended out to more than one second over ensuing laps.

The 17-year old Arjun emerged winner ahead of Artem Markelov, who raced in GP 2 in 2014, and Irish driver Charlie Eastwood.

“I was having trouble with the grip as our tyres were not fresh, and every time I looked in my mirrors I saw a different car on my tail! I could see them all back there so it was difficult to control the pace because they would run very close to me under braking,” said Maini said.
“I’m quite happy with the win. It has been a roller coaster of a weekend. I’ve had the pace the entire weekend and I’m satisfied that I now have something to show for all the hard work,” a delighted Arjun added.

The result leaves Arjun second in the championship with 85 points behind leader Lance Stroll. Arjun is 17 points ahead of Brendon Maisano, who is placed third.
