13 centres identified for Urban Health Mission in State

The much-delayed National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) will finally be implemented in March in the State.

To begin with, as many as 13 Urban Public Health Centres (UPHCs), including eight in Bengaluru, will be brought under the scheme.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of  National Health Mission building in the City on Monday, Health Minister U T Khader said that the objective of the National Urban Health Mission was to address the health service needs of slum dwellers, migrant and vulnerable sections in urban areas.

Programmes such as delivery of health care, environmental sanitation and supply of safe drinking water will be taken up under the Mission.

The criterion

The Health minister said that towns and cities having a population of more than 50,000 would be covered under the scheme. According to the 2011 census, Karnataka has 65 cities/towns with a population of 50,000 and above.

“Of the 13 UPHCs, eight are in the city, two each in Mysuru and Mangaluru and one in Bagalkot. The eight UPHCs in Bengaluru are located at Kamakshipalya, Anjanappa Garden, Sultanpalya, Sahakarnagar, Narayanapura, Adugodi, Elechanahalli and Koramangala,” the minister added.
