In an attempt to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling and to mark the countdown of the second edition of  Bengaluru’s biggest cycling festival, the ‘Vodafone Cycling Marathon 2015’, organisers held ‘104 hours of non-stop static cycling’ marathon in Forum Mall recently.

Avid cyclers from all around the City came to the mall to take part in the event, which was a pre-event to the cycling marathon.

Three static cycles were placed in the central atrium of the mall and the event began in the morning. This was a countdown for the second ‘Vodafone Cycling Marathon’, which will kick off on March 1.

Cyclers from various NGOs came for several days to participate in the challenge. Ravi Shankar, a member of the Cycling Federation of India, was seen at the event.

“Cycling is the best solution to keep fit and it is the best form of exercise. Compared to countries in the West, we are actually behind in picking up cycling – it serves as a form of exercise and transport. I cycle to and from work and twice a month we cover a 150 to 200 kilometre stretch in a day,” he said.

Rohit Giri, international super bike racer was also seen at the mall.

The cycling marathon will allow applicants to choose from across four different categories – ‘Champion Race’ – 60 km; ‘Passion Race’ – 40 km; ‘Green Ride’ – 20 km and ‘Fashion Ride’ – 5 km.

There will also be a fun-filled ‘Kids Ride’ for children below five years. The total prize money for the ‘Champion Race’ will be Rs 10 lakh with the winner getting R 2.5 lakh, the first runner-up Rs 1.75 lakh, the second runner-up Rs 1.25 lakh, and the third runner up Rs 1 lakh.  The remaining amount of Rs 3.5 lakh will be divided among 20 consolation winners.
