Join hands for survival of Kannada: Literary meet chief

Stress on need to take the language to urban areas

All should join hands with each other for the survival of Kannada language, said District Kannada literary meet President N Mahabaleshwara Bhat.

Delivering presidential address here at the 10th district Kannada literary meet at Chembu near Madikeri on Saturday, he said Kodagu district Kannada Sahitya Parishat has been creating awareness on Kannada.

MLA K G Bopaiah said that Kannada should be taken to urban areas. It is a tragedy that a situation has arised wherein we have to fight for the cause of Kannada in Karnataka. It is true that English is a necessity. However, we have to promote Kannada.

The Kannada literary meet should pass a resolution against the implementation of Kasturirangan committee report on Western Ghats. If the recommendations are implemented, then people in the district can not lead a peaceful life. Regional Additional Commissioner Dr M R Ravi said that by using Kannada in our day today life, let us promote the language. People should not have inferiority complex for using Kannada.

Former MP H Vishwanath said that Kannada is flourishing in rural areas while it is
diminishing in urban areas. The government, and NGOs should join hands in conserving the language. The government should initiate measures to impart primary education in mother tongue. A resolution against the implementation of Kasturirangan report and amendment to Land Acquisition Act should be passed.

 The literary meet President N Mahabaleshwar Bhat was taken out in a procession prior to the inauguration of the meet. The procession was flagged of by Payaswini Cooperative Bank President Balachandra Kalagi. Yakshagana, Bhootharadhane, and other varieties of folk teams added colours to the procession. Members of Sthree Shakti Sangha, Anganwadi workers, and others took part in the procession.

Handicrafts Development Corporation Chairman Veena Achaiah, ZP President Chodumada Shareen Subbaiah, Arebhashe Sahitya Academy President Kolyada Girish and Kodagu district unit Kannada Sahitya Parishat President T P Ramesh were present.
