'Priyanka's entry into politics will help Cong'

Last Updated 16 February 2015, 20:46 IST

Former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar hailed Priyanka Gandhi as a dynamic woman and said her entry into politics will help the Congress retain its traditional vote base.

“Priyanka Gandhi is a dynamic leader. She did a good job in her mother’s constituency in Uttar Pradesh during the elections. The party will be able to retain its traditional support base if she enters politics,” she told reporters who sought her reaction on the demand by a section of Congress workers to give party position to Priyanka.

She visited KPCC office on Queen’s Road and met State Congress president G Parameshwara. She said efforts should be made to remove caste system in society. It is only the Congress party that can take everybody along, she added.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at Social Welfare minister H Anjaneya’s home, Kumar expressed that a dalit should become a prime minister or a chief minister in the country. “However, in Karnataka, that position is not open. It has been filled by Siddaramaiah,” she said. Kumar said that even if a dalit cannot become the PM or CM, at least there needs to be someone who can work for the welfare of that community.

“I believe that Siddaramaiah has the capability and the compassion to work for the dalits. It is not necessary that a dalit has to become the chief minister. It is more important that one who works for the dalits and the backward classes has to become the CM,” she said. Kumar expressed her joy at Karnataka allocating huge funds towards the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
